Basic information
Alappuzha has significance in history because the Punnapra Vayalar strike against the British together with the revolt against the feudal was held from here. A unique feature of this district is that no area of this district is under the high lands.Alappuzha stands high in case of literacy rate. Several contributions have been made by this district in the field of Malayalam literature and Malayalam language. There are several educational institutions which include schools, colleges, Medical College, Engineering College and Arts and Science Colleges.
Some of the major pilgrim centers of Kerala are Chettikulangara Bharani Temple, Padanilam Parabrahma Temple, Nagaraja Temple, Mullackal Temple, Arthunkal Church, Champakulam Valiya Palli, Kokkamangalam Church, St. George Forane Church at Edathua etc. At Mavelikkara there is a Buddha idol called as Karumadi kuttan in seated posture which has a height of 4 feet.
A traditional event conducted here is the snake boat race and the famous Nehru Trophy boat race is attracted by all the tourists. It is an important tourist destination and the tourists come here mainly to conduct a backwater cruise in houseboats. Alappuzha is connected with other places through roadways and railways. Alappuzha is also connected with parts of Kerala through waterways as there are many canals and water bodies here.
Almost all of Kerala’s coir industries are located in Alappuzha. It is the main center for the coir and its articles. The paddy field here at Kuttanad is famous and is popularly called as the ‘Rice bowl of Kerala’. Some other crops grown here include arecanut, cardamom, sugar, pepper, tapioca etc.
