About
 kozhikode Kozhikode which was also known as Calicut is a district of Kerala. The name Calicut was the anglicized form of the word Kalikooth which was the word the Arabs used in order to refer Kozhikode. It was also known as Cock Fort. It is believed that the name Kozhikode has been derived from the Malayalam words Koyil and Kodu which means Palace and fortified respectively. The word together means ‘Fortified Palace’. Kozhikode is surrounded by Wayanad district in the East, Malappuram district in the South east and South, Arabian Sea in the West and Kannur district in the North. Based on topography, the district can be classified as sandy, rocky highlands and lateritic midland.

Kozhikode has historical significance because it was in Kappad at Kozhikode that Vasco Da Gama, a Portuguese explorer landed after discovering the sea route to India. Long back Kozhikode was the capital of the Zamorins.The religious community found here includes Hindus, Muslims and Christians of which Hindus form the majority community. Some of the famous temples here include the Tali Temple, Thiruvannur Temple, Lokanarkavu Temple etc. The Muslims here are called as Mappilas and the majority group is the Sunni muslims. There are many churches and mosques here. Many fairs and festivals are conducted in Kozhikode of which the most famous and best of all is the Malabar Mahotsavam. It is the annual tourism festival. Besides many temple festivals are also held.

The beaches, hills, wildlife sanctuaries, natural beauty all make Kozhikode an important tourist destination. Some of the tourist attractions in Kozhikode include art gallery and museum, planetarium, Mananchira square, Thusharagiri waterfalls, Kappad beach etc. Some of the main rivers that flow through Kozhikode district are Mahe River, Kuttiyadi River, Kallai River, Chaliyar River, Kadalundi River etc.

Kozhikode has a significant place in the field of language, literature and journalism. Kozhikode is famous for the folk songs called as Vadakkan Paattukal which is songs sung in praise of the old rulers. The cultural features of Muslims include Oppana and Mappilapattu. Ghazals are one of the favorites of the people here.

Some of the famous educational institutions are here such as The Indian Institute of management, National Institute of Technology, Medical College etc. There are many other professional colleges and Arts and Science colleges in Kozhikode. There is also a university here called the University of Calicut.

Kozhikode is well connected by roadways, railways and airways. An International Airport is located at Karipur with both domestic and international flights. There is an intermediate port and minor port in Kozhikode which are opened for trading purposes.

Agriculture and fishing plays a main role in the economy. Kozhikode was famous for pepper and other spice trading. Kozhikode is the center of both domestic and international trade. Both large scale and small scale industries are in plenty. Some of the items produced here include cotton cloth, handlooms, textiles, tiles, bricks, coir etc. Some other industries in Kozhikode include Animal husbandry and dairy development.
