ernakulam Ernakulam is a district in Kerala which has the largest metropolitan region in Kerala called as Cochin. The name Ernakulam is derived from the Tamil words ‘Erayanar’ and ‘Kulam’ which together form ‘Erayanarkulam’ which means the home of Lord Shiva near the pond. Ernakulam is popularly called as the ‘Commercial Capital of Kerala’ because it is the highest revenue producing district of our state. Ernakulam is surrounded by Idukki district in the east, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts in the South, Arabian Sea in the West and Thrissur district in the North.The district has highlands, midlands and coastal area as well. Some other main rivers through Ernakulam are Muvattupuzha and Chalakkudy Rivers. The climate here is moderate throughout the year. Ernakulam has 7 taluks and is the district that has the most number of Taluks. The most number of municipalities in Kerala also belongs to Ernakulam.

The district has all means of transportation and is well connected with all the places through roadways, railways, waterways and airways. There is an International Airport at Nedumbassery and also a naval Airport. There are 17 railway stations here. Ernakulam is the district that has the maximum number of vehicles. The Cochin port is in Ernakulam and there are many boat services from Ernakulam.

Ernakulam is said to be the most advanced district in Kerala. All the major developments of the state in the field of IT and any industry takes place in Ernakulam. Ernakulam has a significant place in the field of literature. It is said to have the maximum number of educational institutions in Kerala including schools, Arts and Science colleges, Engineering Colleges etc.The religion followed here includes Hindu, Muslim, Christianity, and a few sections of Jains, Buddhists, Jews and Sikhs. The total Christian population in Ernakulam is more than in any other district of Kerala. Some of the main pilgrim centers are Kaladi, Malayattoor Church, St. George Forane Church at Edapally, mosque at Kanjiramattam, Thrippakudam Temple etc. The famous festival conducted here is the Sivarathri festival held at Aluva Manappuram.

Ernakulam is a major center of tourism and attracts large crowd. Some of the attractions in Ernakulam include Bolgatty Palace, Hill Palace, Amusement parks such as Veega Land, Fort Kochi, Chendamangalam Fort, Cherai Beach, Mattancherry etc.The economy of the district is mainly from agriculture that provides great employment opportunities. The main crop cultivated here is coconut together with rubber, paddy and tapioca. Ernakulam is also the biggest commercial center. Fishing is also done here from the coastal areas and the backwaters.
