Basic information
This district has lofty ridges, valleys, dense forests etc. A large area of Wayanad is still covered by forests. There are some famous mountains in Wayand district which includes Chembra peak, Banasura Peak, Brahmagiri etc. The River Kabini and its tributaries flow through Wayanad. On one of the tributaries of this river is the Banasura Sagar dam.
Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of this district. The main crops cultivated here include rice, coffee, tea, cocoa, plantain, vanilla etc. When the price of the crops crashed, thousands of farmers committed suicide of which a majority hails from Wayanad. A large portion of Wayanad is covered by coffee trees and trees like rosewood, anjili etc are preserved for providing shade to the coffee trees. The trees that are found mostly in the reserve forest are the teakwood.
There are many educational institutions in Wayanad which includes Engineering College and veterinary college. There are several tribal groups residing in Wayanad and they lead a nomadic life. It is in Wayanad that the population of the Adivasis is the highest. There are people from Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities in Wayanad. Some of the main pilgrim centers where the devotees come include Thirunelli Temple, Jain temple, Valliyoorkavu, Pallikunnu church, Varambatta mosque etc.
Wayanad is connected to other places through roadways. The nearest railway station and airport is at Kozhikode. There are some places in Wayanad that attracts the tourists to this place. Some of the main attractions include Edakkal caves, Sulthan Bathery, Pookot Lake, Lakkidi, Pakshipathalam, Meenmutty falls etc.
