The Kottayam district is one of the main contributors for the high literacy rate in Kerala. The literacy rate in Kotttayam is 96.4% and it is Kottayam town that is the first town in India to obtain 100% literacy rate. The importance of education in Kottayam district dates back to olden times. The first educational institution to begin the English education was established by the Malankara Orthodox Church missionaries in Kottayam. Later C.M.S High School was established by Benjamin Bailey, who was a British missionary. With the set up of C.M.S College, there was an increase in the interest for higher education. It was also the first college in Kerala. At present there are several schools and colleges here and the colleges offer courses in fields such as art, science, humanities etc.
There is a University in Kottayam called the Mahatma Gandhi University under which many colleges are affiliated. It offers several graduate and postgraduate degree courses. This is the largest of all the Universities in Kerala. This university has jurisdiction over the districts Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Ernakulam. One of the regional centers of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit is in Ettumanoor in Kottayam district.
