The art and culture in Alappuzha is almost similar to that of the culture in the rest of the districts of Kerala. During harvesting season and also during sowing the seeds, people sing folk songs. The songs of the Panans and some dance forms are also still seen here during the festivals. Some of the art forms have vanished long back. It is believed that the dance form Ottanthullal was formed by Kunchan Nambiyar from the Ambalapuzha temple. The theme of this dance is social elements and is performed in a satirical manner.
The art and culture of this place is due to the presence of tribals in this area. The people from all communities celebrate the festivals whether it is Christmas, or Muslim festival.
Some contributions have been made by Alappuzha in the field of language and literature. Two famous Malayalam poets Sahitya Panchananan P.K.Narayana Pillai and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai were from this district. It is also important to note that the first film studio of Kerala was started in Alappuzha.
Alappuzha is very famous for the snake boat races conducted here. Some of the popular boat races held from here are Nehru Trophy Boat Race conducted at Punnamada, Payippad boat race held at Payippad, Thiruvandoor, Neerettupuram, Karuvatta and Thaikkoottam boat races etc that are conducted as part of Onam festival.
