In 1835, the Travancore had two revenue divisions one at Kollam and the other at Kottayam. When Travancore and Cochin merged to form the Travancore Cochin state, Kollam remained as one of the revenue divisions. When Kerala was made a separated state, some of the taluks from Kollam were separated from it and merged with other districts. Chenkotta taluk combined with Madras, Cherthala, Ambalapuzha, Mavelikara, Karthikapalli, Chengannur and Thiruvalla taluks parted and formed a new district named Alappuzha. Later in 1983, some villages of Kanathur taluk and the Pathanamthitta taluk parted to from the new district named Pathanamthitta.
Kollam is divided into 5 taluks and 104 villages. The 5 administrative taluks in Kollam are Pathanapuram, Kunnathur, Kottarakkara, Karunagappally and Kollam. The officer in charge of the taluk is Tahsildar who is assisted by the Village officers. In Kollam there are 13 Blocks, 69 Panchayats. Kollam is a Municipal Corporation and there are 3 municipalities namely Karunagapally, Paravoor (South) and Punalur.
The head of the district administration is the District Collector and plays the role as an agent of the government and also as the Administrator of the District. He has to ensure and maintain the law and order and is also the head of the Land Revenue Department of each district. The present District Collector of Kollam is P.J.Thomas. The revenue division of Kollam has its head quarters at Quilon. All the government offices are at the Kollam Civil station which was built in 1956.

The Police administration in Kollam is divided as City police and rural police. The City Police head quarters is at Kollam and is headed by the City Police Commissioner who is an IPS officer. The rural police head quarters is at Kottarakkara and is headed by the Rural Superintendent of police. The head of each division reports to IG south zone.
The City Police District is divided into 3 sub divisions namely Kollam, Karunagappally and Chathannoor. It is under the control of the Assistant Commissioner of Police. The sub divisions are again divided into circles whose head is the circle Inspector of Police. Each circle is then again divided into numerous police stations with a Sub Inspector of police as the head.
The Rural Police District is divided into 2 subdivisions namely Kottarakkara and Punalur. It is under the control of the Deputy Superintendent of Police. In total there are 29 police stations which are covered in 13 circles. The current City Police Commissioner of Kollam is Sri. N.Gopalakrishnan IPS and Rural SP is Sri. C.Rajagopal IPS. The Traffic is controlled by the City Traffic Police and there is also a traffic Police Station at the Asramam Ground.
There is a Police Museum in Kollam called the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Police Museum which is the first of its kind in India. A number of rare pictures are housed here and there is a room dedicated to the Police Martyrs. It is located in Kollam East Police Station Premises.
