Palakkad is connected to other places by means of roadways and railways. Palakkad junction is a major railway station in the Southern Railway and the Shornur railway station in Palakkad district is the station from which the trains coming from Tamil Nadu are diverted to South Kerala and North Kerala. From the Shornur Junction, there are railway lines towards Calicut (North Kerala side), Thiruvananthapuram (South Kerala side), Nilambur and Palakkad junction (towards Tamil Nadu). There is also a meter gauge line connecting parts of Tamil Nadu such as Madurai, Pollachi and Dindigul. This meter gauge is proposed to be converted into broad gauge and so it has been dismantled.
