Idukki wildlife sanctuary is located near Thodupuzha in Idukki district of Kerala. It was established in the year 1984 and is at a height of 450 to 750 m above sea level. This sanctuary spreads over 77 sq kms of land. It lies between two rivers namely Cheruthoni river and Periyar river.
A wide variety of animals can be found here which includes elephants, bison, deers, tigers, wild boar etc. Besides these there are several species of birds and reptiles found here. Reptiles include poisonous as well as non poisonous snakes. The sight of the elephant herds is also very beautiful. The number of elephants is decreasing due to poaching and other factors. As this place is famous for Indian elephants, it is also called as Idukki Elephant sanctuary. It is also famous for the Nilgiri Thars.
A tourist attraction near this sanctuary is the Idukki Arch dam. The best time to visit this sanctuary is during the months from September to October. Some other tourist destinations near to this sanctuary are Malankara Dam, Thomankuttu Water Falls, KariKodu Bhagawathy, Sri Krishnaswamy Temple etc.
