Malappuram is well connected to other places by roadways, railways and airways. There are two railway lines through Malappuram namely the Mangalore-Madras railway route and Nilambur-Shornur route. The major Railway Stations of Malappuram district in the Mangalore – Madras railway line are Vallikkunnu, Parappanangadi, Tanur, Tirur, Thirunavaya and Kuttipuram railway stations. The railway stations in Nilambur – Shornur route include Nilambur, Vaniyambalam, Thuvur, Melattur, Pattikkad, Angadipuram and Cherukara railway stations. The Mangalore-Madras railway line is along the coastal belt while Nilambur-Shornur line passes through the eastern part of the district.

The State highways that pass through Malappuram are SH 23, SH 28, SH 39, SH 53, SH 60, SH 65, SH 69, SH 71, SH 72 and SH 73. The total length of the state highways is estimated to be around 208 kms. Continuous bus services are available both interstate and interdistrict. The main KSRTC bus stations are at Malappuram, Ponnani, Perinthalmanna and Nilambur.
The Kozhikode International Airport at Karippur in Malappuram is at a distance of 26 kms. The airport is in Malappuram district but serves the city of Kozhikode which is at a distance of 28 kms from the airport.
